This is how the training works
You drive a car with automatic transmission during your driving lessons and at the driving test with the Swedish Transport Administration. If you are completely new to driving, you start with the basics. If you have practiced driving privately, the instructor will make an assessment and focus on what you need to develop, and can also help you with an educational plan.
How many driving lessons you need is individual and depends, among other things, on your previous driving experience, how much you practice driving privately and how quickly you progress. Automatic or manual – which one suits you?
The difference is that with an automatic, you don't have to shift gears and manage the clutch, so you can focus more on the traffic around you. That doesn't make automatic training easier, faster, or cheaper for everyone – the need for lessons varies from person to person.
The most important thing to keep in mind is that a driver's license that is issued for an automatic car only applies to cars with automatic transmissions. Requirements for B-driving license with automatic transmission
To obtain a B license for a car with automatic transmission, the same basic requirements apply as for a regular B license. You need a valid driver's license, pass the mandatory risk training, and pass both the knowledge test and the driving test.
It is a good idea to apply for a driving license permit early on. You need the permit to practice driving and take the driving test, and the application is easiest to complete digitally with e-identification at the Transportstyrelsen.
What does condition 78 mean?
If you take the driving test in a car with an automatic transmission, the driving license condition 78 applies. This means that you can only drive cars with automatic transmissions. This condition can be removed by taking a new driving test in a car with a manual transmission.
Private driving practice
From August 1, 2026, neither the student nor the supervisor will need to take a driving course or introductory training to practice driving privately. However, you do need a valid driving license and a supervisor who is approved by the Transport Agency for you as a student. You also need to be at least 16 years old, have valid identification, and have a green-and-white "EXERCISE DRIVING" sign clearly visible on the back of the car. Mandatory risk training
The risk training consists of two parts. Risk Team is the theoretical part about, among other things, alcohol, drugs and fatigue. Risk Team Two is the practical part, often called the slippery slope.
