Driving licence for car (automatic)
A Category B driving licence allows you to drive passenger cars and light vans with a total weight of up to 3,500 kg. There are three different licence categories for passenger cars: B, B extended, and BE. The difference between these is the type of trailer you are permitted to tow. Below, you can read about the requirements you must meet to obtain a Category B licence.Many modern vehicles are equipped with automatic transmissions, and it is possible to obtain a licence with an automatic restriction, meaning you are only allowed to drive cars fitted with an automatic gearbox. The driving licence training follows the same structure as for a standard B licence, but the difference is that you will be driving an automatic vehicle during your lessons, your Risk 2 training, and your practical driving test with the Swedish Transport Agency (Trafikverket).

Requirements for a category B automatic driving licence
To get a category B driving licence for an automatic car, you need to meet the same basic requirements as for a standard category B driving licence. Among other things, you need to have a valid provisional driving licence, complete the mandatory risk training, and pass both the theory test and the driving test.
It is a good idea to apply for a learner permit early in your driver training. You need the permit to be able to start practice driving and take the driving tests. You can easily apply digitally at the Swedish Transport Agency using electronic identification.
If you choose to take the driving test in an automatic car, your driving licence will have condition 78, which means that the category B licence is only valid for automatic vehicles.
Private practice driving in an automatic car
Saloon From the 1st of August 2026, neither the student nor the supervisor needs to complete a supervisor course or introductory training to be able to practise driving privately for a category B driving licence. The requirement for an introductory training course has been removed.
To learn to drive privately with an automatic car, you instead need, among other things:
- have a valid provisional driving licence
- have a supervisor who is approved by the Swedish Transport Agency for you as a learner driver
- have reached the correct age for learner driving
- carry a valid form of identification
- have a green and white L-plate clearly visible on the back of the car.
The supervisor must therefore still apply for and be approved as a supervisor before private learner driving begins.

Compulsory risk training for a car driving licence
Before taking the theory test and the practical driving test for a category B driving licence, you need to have completed the mandatory the hazard training. It consists of two parts:
Riskettan – Risk Education Part 1
Riskettan is theoretical and deals with things such as alcohol, drugs, fatigue and other risky behaviours in traffic.
The skid training course – Risk education part 2
Risk two is the practical part and is often called the skidpan. Here, you will learn more about speed, safety, and how different road and weather conditions affect the car and your driving, among other things.
The risk training must be completed before you take the theory test and the driving test.
