B Driving Licence Umeå

Driving licence for car (manual)

A B driving licence allows you to drive passenger cars and light trucks with a total weight of up to 3,500 kg. There are three different driving licence categories for passenger cars: B, B extended, and BE. The difference between these categories is the type of trailer you are permitted to tow. Below, you can read about the requirements you need to meet in order to obtain a B-category driving licence. One advantage of obtaining a manual transmission licence is that it allows you to drive all passenger cars, including those with automatic transmissions.

Requirements for a B Driving Licence

To get a category B driving licence in Sweden, you need to meet a number of requirements. Among other things, you must have a valid learner permit, have completed the mandatory risk training, and pass both the theory test and the driving test. To actually receive the category B driving licence, you also need to have turned 18.

It is a good idea to apply for a learner driver permit early in your driver training. You need the permit to be able to start practice driving, regardless of whether you drive privately or with a driving school.

The easiest way to apply is digitally with the Swedish Transport Agency using electronic identification.

Private practice driving for a car licence

Saloon On 1 August 2026, neither the pupil nor the supervisor needs to attend a supervisor course or introductory training. to practise driving privately with a car or light lorry. The requirement for introductory training has been removed.

To learn to drive privately for a category B licence, you instead need:

  • have a valid provisional driving licence
  • have a supervisor who is approved by the Swedish Transport Agency for you as a learner driver
  • have reached the correct age for the type of vehicle you are going to practise driving with
  • have a valid form of identification.

For regular practice driving with a car, you can start from 16 years of age. The supervisor must apply for supervisorship and be approved before you start driving.

When you are learning to drive privately, the green-and-white L-plate must be clearly visible at the rear of the car and the supervisor must have their supervisor's certificate with them. It is the supervisor who is considered the driver and is responsible for the driving during the practice session.

Please feel free to read more about supervisors and private driving practice in Umeå and what applies under the new rules.

Compulsory risk training for a car driving licence

Before you take the theory test and the practical driving test for a category B driving licence, you must have completed an approved risk training. The risk training consists of two parts.

Riskettan – Risk Education Part 1
The first part is theoretical and deals, among other things, with alcohol, drugs, fatigue and other behaviours that can increase the risk of traffic accidents.

The skid training course – Risk education part 2
The second part is practical and is often called the skidpan. Here, among other things, you get to learn more about speed, safety and how different road and weather conditions affect driving.

The risk training is valid until the day you take your driving licence, but for a maximum of five years.
