There are three different licence categories for passenger cars: B, B extended, and BE. The difference between these is the type of trailer you are permitted to tow. Below, you can read about the requirements you must meet to obtain a Category B licence.\n\nMany modern vehicles are equipped with automatic transmissions, and it is possible to obtain a licence with an automatic restriction, meaning you are only allowed to drive cars fitted with an automatic gearbox. Among other things, you need to have a valid provisional driving licence, complete the mandatory risk training, and pass both the theory test and the driving test.<\/p><p data-start=\"596\" data-end=\"870\">It is a good idea to apply for a learner permit early in your driver training. You need the permit to be able to start practice driving and take the driving tests. You can easily apply digitally at the Swedish Transport Agency using electronic identification.<\/p><p data-start=\"872\" data-end=\"1071\">If you choose to take the driving test in an automatic car, your driving licence will have condition 78, which means that the category B licence is only valid for automatic vehicles.<\/p><h3 data-section-id=\"17km9zi\" data-start=\"1073\" data-end=\"1113\">Private practice driving in an automatic car<\/h3><p data-start=\"1115\" data-end=\"1367\">Saloon <strong data-start=\"1121\" data-end=\"1233\">From the 1st of August 2026, neither the student nor the supervisor needs to complete a supervisor course or introductory training<\/strong> to be able to practise driving privately for a category B driving licence. The requirement for an introductory training course has been removed.<\/p><p data-start=\"1369\" data-end=\"1451\">To learn to drive privately with an automatic car, you instead need, among other things:<\/p><ul data-start=\"1453\" data-end=\"1706\"><li data-section-id=\"yj3web\" data-start=\"1453\" data-end=\"1487\">have a valid provisional driving licence<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1x3fm8m\" data-start=\"1488\" data-end=\"1560\">have a supervisor who is approved by the Swedish Transport Agency for you as a learner driver<\/li><li data-section-id=\"7sn1ty\" data-start=\"1561\" data-end=\"1605\">have reached the correct age for learner driving<\/li><li data-section-id=\"tg840n\" data-start=\"1606\" data-end=\"1640\">carry a valid form of identification<\/li><li data-section-id=\"op4nf4\" data-start=\"1641\" data-end=\"1706\">have a green and white L-plate clearly visible on the back of the car.<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"1708\" data-end=\"1866\">The supervisor must therefore still apply for and be approved as a supervisor before private learner driving begins.<\/p><p data-start=\"1868\" data-end=\"2042\">If you want to read more about the new rules, you can read our guide on <strong data-start=\"1929\" data-end=\"2041\"><a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/bjorkstadenstrafikskola.com\/en\/tutor-training-in-umea\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"1931\" data-end=\"2039\">supervisors and private driving practice in Ume\u00e5<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><h3 data-section-id=\"1gu3tsv\" data-start=\"2044\" data-end=\"2089\">Compulsory risk training for a car driving licence<\/h3><p data-start=\"2091\" data-end=\"2231\">Before taking the theory test and the practical driving test for a category B driving licence, you need to have completed the mandatory <a href=\"https:\/\/bjorkstadenstrafikskola.com\/en\/risk-education-umea\/\">the hazard training<\/a>. It consists of two parts:<\/p><p data-start=\"2233\" data-end=\"2390\"><strong data-start=\"2233\" data-end=\"2269\">Riskettan \u2013 Risk Education Part 1<\/strong><br data-start=\"2269\" data-end=\"2272\" \/>Riskettan is theoretical and deals with things such as alcohol, drugs, fatigue and other risky behaviours in traffic.<\/p><p data-start=\"2392\" data-end=\"2624\"><strong data-start=\"2392\" data-end=\"2428\">The skid training course \u2013 Risk education part 2<\/strong><br data-start=\"2428\" data-end=\"2431\" \/>Risk two is the practical part and is often called the skidpan.
